Most people know Arne Jacobsen for his iconic chairs – the Series 7, Ant, Swan, and Egg. But few are aware that the celebrated Danish architect also designed a summer house: Kubeflex – a visionary prototype built from cube-shaped modules that can be flexibly assembled and expanded to meet changing needs.
Jacobsen designed Kubeflex in 1969–70, just a year before his passing in 1971. Though it never went into production, the house served as a private summer retreat for the Jacobsen family until 2002. Since 2005, this one-of-a-kind architectural gem has been preserved and displayed on the grounds of Trapholt Museum – fully furnished with original Arne Jacobsen designs.
The Jacobsen Family’s Hidden Summer Retreat
For decades, this remarkable house stood by a beach in South Zealand, quietly serving as the Jacobsen family’s summer getaway. Only the most dedicated architects knew of its existence, and over the years, professionals in the field reached out to the family, eager to study this radical take on modern living.
Today, thanks to a close collaboration between the Jacobsen family and Trapholt, this pioneering home is open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into Jacobsen’s personal vision of functional and flexible living. It now sits gracefully on the museum grounds, overlooking the tranquil waters of Kolding Fjord.
A Complete Design Experience
Kubeflex offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Arne Jacobsen’s design in a house created by the master himself. Inside, you’ll find a thoughtfully curated interior with dining and living spaces, along with signature pieces like the Vola tap collection and the Cylinda Line serving series.
This immersive experience beautifully complements Trapholt’s extensive collection of Danish furniture and design. It’s a rare chance to see how Jacobsen’s iconic design language plays out in a domestic setting – not just as objects, but as a holistic way of living.
